An engine crane (also known as an engine hoist) is a specialized lifting tool designed to safely remove and install car engines from tight engine bays. It typically consists of a sturdy support base, a telescopic boom, and a hydraulic jack, with casters at the bottom for easy mobility. Common types include manual hydraulic cranes and electric chain hoists, which can bear hundreds of kilograms, helping mechanics smoothly extract the engine from the vehicle body and rotate it for repairs when paired with an engine stand.
When using an engine crane, strict adherence to lifting safety protocols is mandatory. First, ensure the work area is a flat, hard concrete surface, and place wheel chocks behind the vehicle's tires to prevent rolling. Before lifting, adjust the boom's extension length according to the engine's weight to ensure the center of gravity falls within the equipment's safe load capacity. When connecting the lifting gear, use a dedicated engine leveler or spreader bar to maintain horizontal stability throughout the lifting process. During the entire lifting and moving operation, personnel are strictly prohibited from standing under the suspended load, and the load should be kept as low as possible while moving to prevent tipping due to a high center of gravity.
